FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 6, 2019

Former CAFD Employee Accused of Sexual Assault

The Cloquet Area Fire District (CAFD) has received several requests for information regarding a story presented by Fox21 News on June 5, 2019.  In Response, the CAFD is offering the following statement:

The employee referred to in the Fox21 News segment on June 6, 2019 was employed as a Paid-on-Call Firefighter/EMT on August 27, 2013.  He was later appointed to full-time status as a Firefighter/Paramedic on June 20, 2014.  The employee has separated from employment with the CAFD as of June 6, 2019.

As a public safety provider, the CAFD takes public trust and employee integrity very seriously.  The District conducts background checks on all employees and completes annual performance evaluations.  Since the employee was never charged by law enforcement, the accusations did not appear in background checks.  At no time has any law enforcement agency or county prosecutor’s office notified the CAFD that an employee was under investigation.  In addition, the CAFD has not received a single data request, or been made aware of this issue prior to the televised airing of the story. The employee had no public complaints or disciplinary action on his employment record during his employment with the CAFD.
